Habitat for Humanity
"Love Builds Up and Unites."
Martin Luther King Jr.

The intention of this nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization is to build simple and decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. Founded in 1984 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat-NYC builds in the five boroughs of New York City. Professional contractors build the exterior shells to code, and volunteers do the interior construction. Houses are built with "Sweat Equity". Volunteers from our church work side-by-side with the houses' of new homeowners. Each year an average of 10,000 New Yorkers from faith institutions, corporations, schools and civic groups complete about 25 houses per year. Future plans for Habitat-NYC include educating low-income New Yorkers on predatory lending practices that keep them from rising out of poverty, offering financially sound alternatives and working for legislative solutions.
