The Women’s Guild of The Church-in-the-Gardens began with a meeting of several interested women at a Forest Hills Gardens residence on January 7, 1914.
From that time to the present, for ninety-eight years, The Women’s Guild has continued to meet and serve the needs of our church. We currently have 30 plus members on our roles, but are always happy to welcome new members. According to the constitution that was presented at the next monthly meeting, as revised January, 1927, “the object of this organization is to associate its members in Christian work; to promote their mutual acquaintance; and to build up the social and religious work of the Church.” At that time, the Women’s Guild was auxiliary to the Women’s Home Missionary Union of the State of New York, and the New York State Branch of the Women’s Board of Missions, which held a union meeting at the Puritan Church in Brooklyn.
According to the Church By-Laws, as revised May 18, 1972, “The Women’s Guild is the principal auxiliary organization of the Church.”
Today, the Women’s Guild still meets its founding principles. Members meet several times a year to plan various fundraising events. Each fall the Guild hosts the Golden Harvest Bazaar, which turns donations into cash. Each Spring the Guild hosts seven weekly Lenten Luncheons, charging $8 for a delicious homemade “sandwich & salad with dessert” meal. In 2011, The Guild inaugurated a monthly Fellowship Luncheon, which is held at 12:00 noon on the first Wednesday of each month in the Almon Johnson Lounge in the Parish House.
Our charitable donations include an annual pledge to the church budget, cash donations to Star of the Sea (a women’s rescue organization), Hour Children (a group that aids families with incarcerated mothers), The Congregational Home for the Aged, Friends of Station Square, and Christmas bonuses to church staff. The Guild also takes an ad in the playbill for The Gardens’ Players, and generally supports other church needs as they arise.
